Regional and Multilateral Development Organizations

African Development Bank
The African Development Bank (ADB) is Africa’s premier development finance institution which is dedicated to combating poverty and improving living conditions across the continent. The Bank’s mission is to promote economic and social development through loans, equity investments and technical assistance.

Andean Development Corporation
CAF is a multilateral financial institution which supports the sustainable development of its shareholder countries and regional integration. It serves the public and private sectors by supplying multiple products and financial services to an extensive portfolio of clients, formed by the governments of the Shareholder States, financial institutions, and public and private companies.

Asian Development Bank
ADB extends loans and provides technical assistance to its developing member countries for a broad range of development projects and programs. It also promotes and facilitates investment of public and private capital for economic and social development.

Association of South East Asian Nations
The ASEAN Declaration states that the aims and purposes of the Association are: (1) to accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region and (2) to promote regional peace and stability.

Caribbean Development Bank

European Bank for Reconstruction and Development
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development was established in 1991 when communism was crumbling in central and eastern Europe and ex-soviet countries needed support to nurture a new private sector in a democratic environment. Today the EBRD uses the tools of investment to help build market economies and democracies in countries from central Europe to central Asia.

Inter American Development Bank
A long-standing initiative of the Latin American countries, the Inter-American Development Bank was established in 1959 as a multilateral finance institution for the development of the region.

International Committee of the Red Cross
The ICRC is an independent, neutral organization ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of war and armed violence. The ICRC has a permanent mandate under international law to take impartial action for prisoners, the wounded and sick, and civilians affected by conflict.

Islamic Development Bank
The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) is a Multilateral Development Bank (MDB), established to foster the economic development and social progress of its member countries and Muslim communities in non-member countries in accordance with the principles of Shari'ah (Islamic Law).

Center for International Development at Harvard University
The Center for International Development at Harvard University (CID) was established on July 1, 1998 by the Harvard Institute for International Development (HIID) and the Kennedy School of Government (KSG) to serve as Harvard’s primary center for research on sustainable international development.

International Development Research Center
IDRC is a Canadian Crown corporation that works in close collaboration with researchers from the developing world in their search for the means to build healthier, more equitable, and more prosperous societies. In carrying out its mission, IDRC provides funds and expert advice to developing-country researchers working to solve critical development problems.

International Institute for Environment and Development
IIED is an international policy research institute and non governmental body working for more sustainable and equitable global development. The Institute acts as a catalyst, broker and facilitator and helps vulnerable groups find their voice and ensure their interests are heard in decision-making. Environmental sustainability is a core concern but not at the expense of people’s livelihoods.

International Institute for Peace and Development
The International Center for Peace and Development carries on research in the fields of development, education, employment, peace and security and works in collaboration with other organizations to promote activities that will advance progress toward world peace and prosperity.

Overseas Development Institute

Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative (OPHI)
OPHI is a new economic research centre within the Oxford Department of International Development at Oxford University. Led by Sabina Alkire, OPHI advances the human development approach to poverty reduction by fundamental, sustained, and multidisciplinary research that is effectively disseminated. The overall aim is to build and advance a more systematic methodological and economic framework to underlie multidimensional poverty reduction. OPHI’s vision is a world in which decision makers are able to advance people’s capabilities and freedoms, in part because user-friendly research and policy advice is readily available.

South Centre
The South Centre (the Centre) is an intergovernmental organization of developing countries established by an Intergovernmental Agreement (Treaty) which came into force on 31 July 1995 with its headquarters in Geneva. The South Centre has grown out of the work and experience of the South Commission and its follow-up mechanism, and from recognition of the need for enhanced South-South co-operation.

World Bank Institute
The World Bank Institute is the capacity development arm of the World Bank, and helps countries share and apply global and local knowledge to meet development challenges. WBI's capacity development programs are designed to build skills among groups of individuals involved in performing tasks, and also to strengthen the organizations in which they work, and the sociopolitical environment in which they operate.

BLDS is a graduate research library. Anyone with an interest in development related research can use us, either in person or remotely. The extensive holdings have been built up since 1966 and constitute Europe's most comprehensive research collection on development issues, providing an unparalleled range and depth of coverage.

Directory of Development Organizations

International Council of Voluntary Agencies

The Global Development Connection

Third World Network

World Economic Outlook Database
The WEO database is created during the biannual World Economic Outlook (WEO) exercise, which begins in January and June of each year and results in the WEO publication, which is released in May and October. The WEO exercise is coordinated by the World Economic Studies Division in the Research Department.
