Launch of the Report in Antarctica

15 - 17 January, 2008

Ana Lya Uriarte, Chile’s Environment Minister, participated in the launch along with Raúl Vergara, Undersecretary of Defense for the Air Force; José Retamales, Director of the Chilean National Antarctic Institute (INACH); and Luis Cifuentes and Jorge Carrasco, the Chilean members of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The purpose of the mission was to launch the UNDP’s Human Development Report “Fighting Climate Change: Human Solidarity in a Divided World” at the Chile’s Antarctic Air Base.

The director of the Chilean National Antarctic Institute (INACH) talked about climate change impacts on Antarctic life and nature, and the critical role that scientists play. “202 glaciers have diminished in Antarctica”, said José Retamales.

The opportunity was used to present and interact with winners of a competition organized by INACH for secondary school students on climate change research proposals. Sofía Barría, a Santiago student, gave her testimony about how climate change awareness has changed her life and her family’s habits. The event emphasized the crucial role of education among climate change policies based on adaptation.
